Hope House Surgery Transforms Wasteland into Community Wildlife Oasis
Last year, the team at Hope House Surgery applied for a grant from the West of England Combined Authority to transform a strip of unused land into a space the whole community could enjoy.
The plot of land, located to the right of the surgery’s main entrance (between the surgery and neighbouring houses), was previously overgrown with brambles and often misused as a dog toilet. Staff regularly had to clear the area of dog waste, making it an unpleasant and wasted space.
Thanks to funding from the West of England Combined Authority and additional support from Radstock and Westfield Big Local, the site has now been transformed into a thriving oasis for local wildlife.
At the far end of the garden, planting has been designed to attract pollinators, while the front area features herb beds and raised vegetable beds. The space is open for the community to enjoy—whether that’s planting, picking, or growing together.
